Join Stop UBC Animal Research at public education event at showing of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"

WHAT: "Rise of the Planet of the Apes just opened around North America to rave reviews. The film makes a powerful case against animal research and is perhaps one of the greatest commercial animal rights films ever made (Click here to watch movie trailer: http://www.youtube.com/wat​ch?v=LaK6khs8aMw). Stop UBC Animal Research will educate moviegoers about UBC's cruel experiments on non-human primates and other animals. NOTE: if you haven't seen the film yet you can see it after our public education event. Let's make the evening a Stop UBC Animal Research social night too!

WHAT TO BRING: Signs that read, "Stop UBC's Monkey Business", "UBC Conducts Cruel Experiments on Monkeys", UBC Shocks Monkeys in the Name of 'Science'", "UBC Researchers Blind Monkeys in the Name of 'Science'." We'll need four people to dress up as monkeys. We will provide the costumes. Be sure to wear your "Stop UBC Animal Research" T-shirt.

Animal Voices Outdoor Potluck & Book Swap

WHEN: Saturday, August 13 · 6:00pm - 8:30pm

WHERE: Trout Lake Park, 3350 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, British Columbia

WHAT: The Animal Voices Radio Show and Earthsave Canada are teaming up to bring you this summer outdoor potluck!

This one has a little bit of a twist - we're also going to have a book swap! So all you book lovers out there who are looking to pass on some literary treasures and take home some new favorites, bring 'em with you to the potluck. Books to swap need not be limited to veg/animal advocacy or cookbooks, though these are all much encouraged as offerings - you might send your books home with someone who's veg-curious and could really gain a lot from the info.

The potluck is open to all, whether you're an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, or just a little veg-curious about what the heck vegans eat every day. All we ask is that you please bring a vegan dish to share so that all may be able to partake in all the abundance regardless what dietary lifestyle they subscribe to.

Please also bring all of your own serving utensils, as well as plates, cups, forks, knives and spoons that you and your friends and family (who you're very encouraged to bring along) might need, as we will not be able to supply these (and everyone just using their hands isn't very Foodsafe).

We'll try to get the picnic tables if they're available, but either way we'll still set up our tables to put your goodies on near there, so that's where you'll find us! We will also have our tent and banner on display so you can find us easily.

We will also be having a raffle fundraiser with some fabulous animal-friendly prizes up for offer.

International Day Of Action For South Korean Dogs And Cats

WHAT: In Defense of Animals invites you to act on behalf of the two million dogs and cats mercilessly killed every year in South Korea for human consumption. Kept in tiny, filthy cages, the dogs are slaughtered in unimaginable ways. Eyewitnesses report dogs being slowly and agonizingly torn apart and then beaten to death, due to the myth that the more a dog suffers during his death, the more virility a man will enjoy from eating his meat. Stop UBC Animal Research has tried several avenues of communication trying to reach Stephen Toope president of UBC to discuss the animal research happening at his university.  There have been letters, emails, phone calls, and even Valentines day cards all of which have been ignored. Well Mr. Toope you can't ignore STOP forever.

Monday morning as President Stephen Toope took the stage in the Life Science building and STOP was there asking him "When does UBC plan to kill the monkeys and why do you refuse to sell us the monkeys so we can release them to a sanctuary?" Mr.Toope avoided the question and said their would be a opportunity for discussions after. After the speeches there were no discussions and we were asked to leave.

Tuesday evening after a showing of the movie "In the Heat of the Night" Stephen Toope took the podium and STOP was there to ask the questions he has been avoiding. Once again Mr.Toope avoided our questions and the discussion period was short lived. Afterwards there was food and drinks and STOP handed out information to the audience.

It amazes me how few people would take STOP's information. "In the Heat of the Night" was published in 1965 against the backdrop of the American civil rights movement and discusses social issues related to race. How could this audience not make the connection between racism and speciesism. One quote comes to my mind.

After a explosion at a nuclear power plant 200 km away from where our Cove Guardians were staying they finally got taxis to a airport in Akita. They arrived to a deserted city and a crowded airport without enough funds to fly out. Thanks to the support and donations raised through their blog they have acquired tickets and will be flying out shortly. Thank goodness. Wishing them a fast and safe journey back.
